Looking Ahead

Posted: December 20, 2024 ~

In 1898, more than 125 years ago, Ellen G. White wrote these compelling words: “Brethren and sisters, do we believe the Word of God, or not? Do we not see the signs fulfilling all around us? Do we realize that we are standing on the very verge of eternity, that we have no time to make crooked paths and blundering movements involving the worth of the soul? When the last call shall be made, Behold the bridegroom cometh; go ye forth to meet him, shall we represent the foolish virgins, who had no oil in their vessels with their lamps? Whatever our line of work, let us remember that we cannot carry it ourselves. Let us be sure that we are making every possible effort to save souls. Self and self-serving have no place now and never had in a true religious experience. Everything we do must be done to the glory of God. Work and pray, and God will cooperate with your efforts” (Ms 49, 1898 - MR No. 1507 for Workers in the Echo Office, Australia).

This passage contains powerful and challenging truths for us today. The parable of the wise and foolish virgins reminds us to stay prepared, as Jesus warned He will come "at an hour you do not expect" (Matthew 24:44). And we cannot become complacent just because His return seems delayed (Matthew 24:48).

I am convicted, that two of the major threats facing God’s people today are: 1) becoming distracted or discouraged by the apparent delay of Christ's return, and 2) allowing our love to grow cold (Matthew 24:12). As this year draws to a close, may we fan the flame of love for God and love for one another; may we deepen our dependence on God by living according to “every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4); and may we live with an eager expectation of His soon return.

In the last part of this letter, I want wish each of you and your families a safe and wonderful holiday season, I want to express my gratitude to each of you, and take a moment to look ahead.

May you each be blessed and draw closer to God and your loved ones during this time of rest and reflection at the end of 2024. Reflection is very important. Take time to look back over the last twelve months to celebrate how God has blessed and lead you and your family. Though we all have room for growth, we must celebrate what God is accomplishing in our lives and what He has promised to complete.

I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your contributions and faithfulness to our church over this past year. As your pastor, I am truly blessed by each of you. Whether through small gestures or in significant ways, you have enriched our church and blessed my family. Thank you for your love, prayers, and participation in our Salmon Arm church family.

Looking ahead, our church and leadership we will focus on two key areas. First, the North American Division's Pentecost 2025 initiative—stay tuned for more information. Second, the ministry of hospitality. Hospitality must become one of the most important ministries of our church. Not only does hospitality start with the first impression visitors have as they are welcomed to our church, but as we will come to learn and better understand, hospitality is the fruit of a deep, vibrant, and healthy relationship with God. In other words, to the degree that our relationship with God is weak, so our hospitality and love will be deficient, both towards visitors and one another. And let me be the first to say, we all have areas of weakness, which means we all have room to grow in living out the hospitality of Christ.

Finally, please mark these important January dates, and stay tuned for more information:

We have an exciting and full year ahead and with each day, we are closer to Jesus' soon return! May we encourage one another daily and press together like never before.

Sincerely your pastor, friend, and brother in Christ,
